The wooden bell tower is located about 300 meters northeast of Sengyo-kan, and was built in 1671 by Masaharu Abe, the lord of the castle, to announce the time.
The bell is 182 cm tall, 76 cm in diameter, and weighs 750 kg, and is said to contain 20 large oval gold oval sheets. Since its construction, the bell has been ringing a clear tone at 6:00, noon, 15:00, and 18:00, except during the turbulent period of the Meiji Restoration.
In 1996, it was selected as one of the “100 Best Soundscapes of Japan to Preserve” by the Environment Agency (now the Ministry of the Environment).
